Five ‘Must Haves’ for Your Kitchen Remodel

A kitchen remodel is one of the most common updates tackled by today’s homeowners.  A good kitchen remodel can yield a return on investment of up to 80%, depending on the study cited.  The kitchen is the heart of the home, and families want a functional space that is organized, attractive, and serves as a gathering place for family and friends.  If your kitchen needs an update, here are five must have items to consider incorporating into the design.

Island Cooktop

The major advantage of an island cooktop is that the cook doesn’t have to face the wall when cooking.  Kitchens are often open to other rooms, and an island cooktop allows the cook to better interact with family and guests.  Make sure that the island is large enough to provide ample counter space around the cooktop.  A downdraft or vent hood is a necessity for eliminating smoke and grease.

Integrated Refrigerator

An integrated refrigerator is actually incorporated into the cabinets for a high end, custom designed look.  The doors match the cabinets.  This differs from a counter depth refrigerator that just sits flush with the cabinets.  Integrating the appliances gives a clean, uncluttered look to the kitchen.  These refrigerators are generally more expensive than traditional models and are marketed by niche companies including Sub-Zero, Bosch, and Thermadore.  Other appliances to consider integrating into the cabinetry are dishwashers and warming drawers.

Deep Drawers

Many homeowners are opting for the convenience of deep drawers over lower cabinets.  Drawers can afford better organization of items while eliminating the necessity of stooping down to look into cabinets.  Heavy duty runners allow for the storage of heavy items like pots and pans.  Specialty drawers are configured to hold dishes and serving pieces.  One or two deep drawers are often more useful than several shallower drawers.

Touch-free Faucets

These faucets turn on when a hand or other object is waved within four inches of a sensor.  It is a great convenience when hands are especially messy.  After two minutes of inactivity, these faucets turn off automatically so that the water is never accidentally left running.  Touch-free faucets are available from major manufacturers in a variety of finishes.

Coffee Bar

This area provides a convenient place for family and guests to serve themselves without being in the cook’s way.  It may contain a small counter space, a coffee maker, and storage for cups and supplies.  A beverage center can easily be substituted for the coffee bar.  A mini refrigerator for water and cold drinks eliminates the need to open the main refrigerator.
